No ads, no selling your data, no tracking you across the web. Accounts are optional: everything here works without one.
Without an account
Your ticks and any areas you download for offline use stay on your device. They're never sent anywhere.
If you send a contribution without signing in, the name you type is shown with it, marked unverified. A way to reach you, if you leave one, is kept privately, only so we can ask about that submission. It never goes into the review or the public archive.
To decide what to build next, we count anonymous usage: which pages and routes get viewed, what people search for, and where visitors come from (country only). That's measured with Cloudflare Web Analytics and this site's own server. There are no user IDs, and usage is never tied to an account. To opt out on a device, visit redrockbeta.com/?noanalytics once.
With an account
If you sign in, we store:
- your email address, used only to send sign-in codes and messages about your account and your contributions, never marketing
- your handle, and a display name if you choose one
- your ticks: what you climbed or hiked, when, how, and any partners and notes you add, so they sync between your devices. They also count, anonymously, toward “Ticked by 12 climbers” on a route’s page: a number of people, never who, and only shown once at least 3 have ticked it.
- which submissions are yours, and what you affirmed when you sent them (that the words and photos are your own)
- your signed-in devices: a label like “iPhone, Safari” and when each was last used, so you can sign out of them
- your passkeys, if you add any: a public key and a device label for each. Your fingerprint or face never leaves your device; we couldn't see it if we wanted to.
Signing in sets one cookie, only to keep you signed in. Nothing else on this site uses cookies.
What's public
- Your handle, your display name if you set one, and your profile page (redrockbeta.com/u/your-handle), which lists what you've added and improved.
- What you contribute (routes, beta, photos), credited to your handle. Contributions are public domain (CC0) and become part of an open archive that anyone can copy. Once a contribution is published, the credit on it is permanent: we can remove your display name, but your handle stays on it, including in the archive's history and in copies other people have made.
- Your ticks are private: only you see them, unless you turn on “Show my ticks on my profile”. Then your profile shows each tick's route, date and style, never partners or notes; you choose whether earlier ticks are included, and can keep any one off. Signing out takes your ticks off that device.
Your email address is never public.
Who else handles it
- Cloudflare hosts the site and stores account data. It processes IP addresses to deliver the site and block abuse; we don't keep them.
- Resend sends sign-in codes, so it sees your email address.
- GitHub is where maintainers review submissions, in a private repository. A submission there carries your credit, never your email address.
We don't sell or share personal data with anyone else.
Your account, your call
From your account settings you can download everything we hold about you (your ticks, profile, signed-in devices and the submissions you've sent; your ticks also download as a spreadsheet), change your email, or delete your account.
Deleting it removes your email, display name, ticks and signed-in devices right away; they drop out of our backups within 7 days. What you've already sent stays as sent, credited to your handle, and the handle is never given to anyone else.
How long we keep things
- Sign-in codes expire after 10 minutes.
- A signed-in device stays signed in for about a year after it was last used.
- Account data stays until you delete it.
Age
You need to be 13 or older to create an account.
