About Red Rock Beta

Most climbing beta in the United States lives on one website owned by one company. That company closed its public data feed years ago. If it ever goes dark, decades of shared knowledge go with it.

Red Rock Beta is a small answer to that. The facts for every route we know about (grades, first ascents, lengths, bolt counts, coordinates) are kept in a plain, open archive that anyone can download and mirror, released into the public domain, in the same open tradition as OpenBeta. Anything a climber contributes here in their own words stays free too. This first year is about building that shared guide together: fuller route descriptions, rappel and descent information, topos, photos, and corrections from people who know the climbs firsthand.

We are Red Rock climbers and route developers: bolting new lines, replacing hardware, and upgrading anchors. Red Rock Beta gives the whole community a place to share changes while they are still fresh.

What's included

The map covers Red Rock Canyon and the limestone around it (La Madre, Mt. Charleston and Blue Diamond), with grades, first-ascent parties, lengths, pitch and bolt counts, and links out to other sources. Coverage is broad but uneven. Most coordinates are area-level for now, so a pin usually marks the wall, not the exact start.

How to help

Put up a new route or crag? Add a route or area with as much detail as you have. For an existing climb, use “Add beta” for pitches, the rack, the descent, corrections, or closures. Write descriptions from your own experience; do not copy prose from Mountain Project, a guidebook, or another source. Facts such as grades, first ascents, and page numbers are fine to cite.

Have an AI assistant? Red Rock Beta has an open API and an MCP server. Connect it to ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant, and it can turn your notes into a route submission or send us a correction. Here's how.

Privacy

No ads and no selling your data. We count anonymous usage, with no user IDs, to decide what to build next. What we store, what's public and how to opt out: the privacy policy.

Use at your own risk

Climbing, canyoneering, and the approaches to reach them are inherently dangerous. People get seriously hurt or killed doing this. Nothing here replaces your own judgment, training, and a firsthand look at the rock, the protection, the anchors, and the descent.

This beta comes from a mix of imported sources and firsthand accounts, and some of it will be wrong, outdated, or missing. Grades, protection, bolt counts, descents, and closure info can all be off. Red Rock’s Aztec sandstone loses much of its strength when wet, so give it a day or two to dry after rain or snow before climbing. Check current conditions with the land manager directly, not just here.
