Mt Wilson Traverse
Class 4 · 7.0 mi · +4,898 ft · from the start
One of the best hikes in Red Rock, done in either direction. From White Pinnacle Peak you continue traversing the ridge up to Dead Horse Peak and the south peak of Mt Wilson, then hit the north peak before descending into Oak Creek Canyon via Cleaver Crack, out to the Middle Oak Creek trailhead.
Expect 6 to 10+ hours for the whole day, and start early to avoid the heat. Ideally do the nervous traverse on Cleaver Crack, the stretch closest to the north peak, in daylight: it can be hard to navigate. It really isn't that bad so long as you find the right route. Going down Cleaver Crack, follow the GPX and keep a close eye out for cairns; there's a good bit of downclimbing but no rappels, and once you're in Oak Creek Canyon it's straightforward to the trailhead.
The ridge needs few class 4 moves if you hike a bit in from the crest and follow the GPX track and the cairned trail. The cruxes of the day are the gully up to White Pinnacle Peak, the nervous traverse, and a couple of secure 4th class climbing spots in the Cleaver Crack gully.
Shuttle between the First Creek and Middle Oak Creek trailheads, or walk the road between them. Carry two liters minimum, three plus on a hot day: there's no water to filter once you leave First Creek or Oak Creek.
