Mezzo Canyon
Class 3 · 3.9 mi · +1,634 ft
A long day: plan on 6 to 10 hours. Best June to October.
Approach: start at the Cathedral Rock trailhead. Where the trail splits, go left (the Little Falls approach). When that trail ends, traverse cross-country to Mezzo Canyon.
Exit: after the last drop, look for a use trail on canyon left heading down canyon, and follow it to the Mary Jane Falls trailhead. That's about 1.3 miles by road from the Cathedral Rock trailhead, so leave a car there or walk back. No permit is needed, but early in the season call the ranger station to check the trailheads are open: with snow they're likely closed.
Access
Parts of the range are the Mt. Charleston Wilderness, where motorized equipment isn't allowed: no power drills. Dogs must be leashed at trailheads. Campfires are banned year-round within a mile of homes in Kyle and Lee Canyons, and the Forest Service adds seasonal fire restrictions in summer, so check before you go.
