Sheer Determination
5.9 trad · 70 ft
Panty Wall has 28 routes, from 5.5 to 5.12a; 15 are harder, and 1 other is the same grade.
First ascent: FRA: Thomas Gilmore
Description
Sheer Determination climbs between Panty Raid and Edible Panties to its own dedicated anchor visible at the lip. When looking at the last 10 feet of the route, there are 2 obvious seams leading to the anchor. Staying left lower and climbing the left seam keeps this route 5.9 but starting on Panty Raid and climbing through the right seam bumps it up to 10+/11a. The 5.9 variation goes on mostly passive pro so bring lots of stoppers and .2-.75. The 10+/11a variation takes a few cams from micro to .5 but mostly stoppers. The 10+/11a variation would be a proud onsight at the grade and I would think the average climber would prefer to preview the route after climbing the 5.9 variation.
Location
Between edible panties and Panty Raid. This whole panel of rock is climbable so choose your own adventure. Left is 5.9ish and right is 11aish
Protection
Lots of stoppers. The 5.9 takes a few cams from .2-.5 (double .5) and the harder variation takes .1-.5 (maybe double .4)
Access
The 13-mile Scenic Drive requires a timed-entry reservation October to May and has seasonal gate hours. Calico Basin and Kraft Mountain sit outside the Scenic Drive and need no reservation.
Wet rock: Aztec sandstone loses much of its strength when wet. Do not climb for at least 24 to 48 hours after rain or snowmelt, or holds break off and routes are permanently damaged.
